Naturopathic Medicine in St James

Are you looking for an alternative to the conventional medical model? Perhaps you are tired of resorting to prescription or over-the-counter medications for pain management or other issues. Naturopathic Medicine at Westwood Family Chiropractic may be precisely what you’re looking for.

Meet Our Naturopathic Doctor

dr ashley cassanDr. Ashley Cassan earned a Doctor of Naturopathy degree from The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. The first two years of her degree program is similar to traditional medical school, concentrating on the body sciences. The last two years of her program focused on natural and alternative therapies such as acupuncture and cupping.

In addition to her doctorate, Dr. Cassan took additional certifications in Cosmetic Acupuncture to target scars, wrinkles, acne and rashes.

She also has certification in IV Nutrient Therapy. This type of therapy uses high doses of vitamins and minerals directly administered into the circulatory system. Cancer patients often seek this therapy to manage the side effects of chemotherapy and those with digestive problems also come in for IV Nutrient Therapy.

Many health conditions have been successfully addressed through Naturopathic Medicine. While she welcomes many different health concerns, Dr. Cassan has a particular interest in the following:

  • Athletic performance
  • Digestive complaints
  • Fatigue
  • Skin health
  • Weight loss

Why Choose the Naturopathic Route?

Dr. Cassan sees many patients who are frustrated with Western medicine and nobody can figure out what’s wrong with them. They come to our practice seeking help. The other type of patient we see is someone who is aware of what they’re putting in their body and want a safer, more preventative approach. They want to know how they can get healthy now, so they don’t have to go on a medication.

Get to the Root Cause

As an ND, Dr. Cassan always seeks to determine the root cause of a particular issue. For example, if someone has eczema and goes to an MD for it, the patient will likely be given a cream for it. But that approach doesn’t address the underlying issue. In a case like that, Dr. Cassan would talk to the patient about any stress they are experiencing and what their lifestyle habits are. “I find that, if someone has a rash, 90% of the time, it’s related to what they’re eating and their digestive system,” she said.

Here are some of the modalities that Dr. Cassan uses to assist patients:

  • Acupuncture
  • Bodywork/massage therapy
  • Botanical medicine

  • Cupping
  • Food sensitivity testing
  • Homeopathy

  • Hydrotherapy
  • IV nutrient therapy

Before you come in for your first appointment, you will be given a detailed intake form to complete at home. Then you will have a consult with Dr. Cassan. She will discuss with you how you eat, sleep, exercise, etc.

Dr. Cassan also can order bloodwork and a stool analysis so she can gain a comprehensive picture of your health profile. The blood test can help uncover triggers that are causing inflammation. The stool test can show if bacteria are creating an imbalance leading to certain conditions. The specialized lab testing she orders can reveal if you have hormonal issues or food allergies.

After the consultation and test results come back, Dr. Cassan will create a whole care plan. She’ll let you know what your current state of health is, where she’d like you to be and the steps needed to get there.

When you see Dr. Cassan for care, you can be confident knowing she will provide a plan that’s customized, never cookie-cutter. For example, she can provide patients with customized botanical tinctures that contain a different combination of certain herbs.

Dr. Cassan always will start her patients off slow in areas such as diet and exercise. That’s because she wants them to be able to commit to their new lifestyle for the long term.
