Making Spinal Health a Priority

group stretching exerciseThe health of your spine should be a top priority as it has a tremendous impact on your overall wellbeing. It helps to hold up your body and carry out routine tasks daily. Here are some ways you can make your spinal health a priority:

Stay Hydrated

Every cell in your body needs water to operate correctly, including your those that are a part of your nervous system. Filled with fluid, your spinal discs are an axis of rotation allowing for the movement of your whole spine. For your spine to perform optimally, your discs need to function optimally as well, and that means adequate hydration is vital. Make a goal of drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. So, if you weigh 180 pounds, that means you should be drinking at least 90 ounces of water each day.

Reduce Stress

You may not realize it, but the adverse effects of stress can take its toll on your body. Chronic stress can wear you down both physically and emotionally. Adding daily habits such as meditation, mindful breathing or other calming activities can all help increase your ability to deal with stressors. Additionally, if there are ways to make changes in your life to minimize the amount of stress you experience, try to do so.

Increase Happiness

Don’t stop at reducing stressors in your life and improving your capacity to handle stress – add joy to your life as well. Remember to take the time to enjoy the little things. Savoring the joyous activities, moments and laughter does better for your body and mind than you might realize.

Get To Moving

Instead of making excuses, make your body start moving more! Try to devote at least half an hour each day to movement. That does not mean you have to go hard by hitting the weights seven days a week, but you should make it a point to walk or go for a bike ride around your neighborhood. There are always ways to get moving no matter what fitness level you are at. With so many kinds of exercise, you are sure to find something that you find enjoyable.

Stretch It Out

You don’t have to become a yoga master, but you should try to incorporate more stretching in your daily life, even if it is just for a few minutes before going to sleep and right after waking up. Here are a few stretches to try:

  • Pull your knees up into your chest and curl your head to your knees
  • Stretch your entire body with outstretched arms and legs
  • Pull your knees into your chest and rotate your knees over to one side and then to the other side
  • Sit up and plant your feet flat on the floor and then bend over at your hips while letting your arms hang down toward your feet

Be sure to hold all your poses for at least 15 seconds at a time.
